All employees are required to call 911 to report a release or spill, and to provide as much information about the spill as possible. Training in Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) has been provided for scores of SSC employees including scientists, nurses, lab technicians, and those at SSC’s Fire Department. These employees maintain HAZWOPER certification by attending annual refresher training. The Fire Department is trained to be the first responder to spills and to provide appropriate notifications. Spill responders make the area safe, contain the spill, coordinate cleanup and disposal of waste, and restoration of the affected area if necessary. SSC participates with surrounding area fire departments in a cooperative effort to provide assistance during emergency situations if required.
