Area I

Old Keller Range
When: 1968 -1980
Where: Northern central portion of SSC
What: Testing and disposal of various explosives
Contaminants: Explosive compounds
Status: Remedial Investigation (RI) was completed. According to the RI, no further action (NFA) is required to ensure protection of human health. In late 2004 NASA installed a fence as a control measure around a trench that contains UXO material to eliminate/reduce risk of exposure to the material. NASA submitted to the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) a final NFA request document in early 2007. The MDEQ concurred with the NFA request in correspondence dated May 17, 2007. The Department of Defense/U. S. Army who is listed as a Potentially Responsible Party for this site conducted a 5-year Review through a third party contractor, Earth Tech in January 2008. Their main concern was to verify the effectiveness of the installed control measures.
