Environmental Laboratory
The Laboratory Services Contract (LSC) includes the Environmental Laboratory that provides support to NASA for collection and analyses of environmental samples, wetlands management, wild animal control and characterization of hazardous waste.

In the 1970s the Environmental Laboratory was primarily used as a research laboratory with many successful projects including the development of artificial marsh systems used for wastewater treatment. In the 1990s the laboratory emphasis shifted from research to environmental testing.

Today the Environmental Laboratory is a state-certified analytical laboratory per EPA guidelines (Lab #MS00903) with a broad range of capabilities. Currently the lab participates in several types of proficiency testing programs, reporting 125 different analytes.

Laboratory capabilities includes:

• Site Monitoring – The Environmental Laboratory collects all the samples and performs the analyses for the NPDES Outfalls, Drinking Water and Groundwater Monitoring Wells on a regular basis. In addition, the Environmental Laboratory assists NASA in meeting other federal and state reporting requirements.

• Wetland Management – The Environmental Laboratory assists in the preparation of requests for wetland use by doing the point assessment using the Charleston Method of determination. Annual vegetation surveys of the four mitigation areas, including their maintenance, are also the responsibility of the laboratory.

• Remediation Systems Operation – The Environmental Laboratory monitors the groundwater pump and treat systems for the remediation sites.

• Solid Waste Management – To ensure the landfill is operating within permit requirements, the laboratory collects and analyzes samples from 15 monitoring wells surrounding the landfill.
