Logtown was once a thriving industrial town in the mid-1800s when logging activities began and sawmills were built in the region along the Pearl River. The first reported sawmill at Logtown was built in 1845. Sawmills were operated in Logtown until 1924 by various entities which included E.G. Goddard Lumber Co., Wingate Mill, Weston-Carre, H. Weston Lumber Co., and Weston Mills. By 1917 two mills operated at Logtown, covering several acres with the mills, planer, dry kilns and lumber yards. The town's population quickly dwindled in the early 1900s following the closure of most of the major sawmills in the region; however logging has remained an important industry in the area around SSC. A large portion of the land in the Buffer Zone is currently harvested for timber. All people living in the buffer zone were evacuated in July 1964 to make way for what is now known as NASA's John C. Stennis Space Center.
