Each State is required to adopt water quality standards under the Federal Water Pollution Control Act, as amended by the Clean Water Act (CWA) of 1977, reauthorized in 1987. These standards are established based on the use and values of waters for public water supplies, propagation of fish and wildlife, recreation, agriculture, industry, and navigation. Federal standards and guidelines have also been established for the protection of aquatic life and protection of human health through consumptive pathways. Standards for potable waters have been established under the Safe Drinking Water Act.

The State of Mississippi has jurisdiction for programs to improve water quality. Mississippi has adopted water quality standards contained in Title 49 - Conservation and Ecology, Chapter 17, titled "Mississippi Safe Drinking Water Law of 1976".

NASA SSC maintains a National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit for the discharge of wastewaters that leave SSC as outfalls. SSC currently has five outfalls that come from various sources at the facility and are covered by an NPDES permit issued by the MDEQ. These outfalls contain deluge water or water used to cool rocket engines, and water that has been treated by biological lagoons or rock reed filters. Water samples are collected from each outfall and analyzed for specific contaminants at a frequency that is specified in SSC’s permit. SSC has a long history of being in compliance with the monitoring requirements of the permit. All outfalls are released to the Access Canal of Mike’s River, then on to the East Pearl River.
